Looking for a YA series to read this Christmas? // No Vain Loss by M.C. Frank : Book Review

A soldier is summoned to the North Pole, days before the year changes, told to fix the great Clock for a celebration. He has no idea what to do.A girl, hunted for the crime of being born, almost dies out on the ice. She is rescued by the last polar bear left alive.
A library waits for them both, a library built over a span of a hundred years, forgotten in the basement of an ice shack.
The world hasn’t known hunger or sickness in hundreds of years. It has also forgotten love and beauty.
This is the One World.
The year is 2524.

Inspired by the short stories of Ray Bradbury, this futuristic young adult novel in three parts is set in a world where Christmas -among other things- is obsolete and a Clock is what keeps the fragile balance of peace.

Written in three parts, this is the breathtaking story of how two unlikely people change the world, and each other, one book at a time.

In No Vain Loss, the world is on the brink of the greatest war humanity has ever known. Lives will be lost. New truths will be revealed.

Rating: 4.5/5 stars

What I liked:

This series is definitely one of my all-time favorites. I don’t think I have come across a better written young adult series; most of them are either too simplistic, or cheesy, or transparently copying The Hunger Games so that the sales are high. No Ordinary Star on the hand is a fresh story, built on a striking, frozen, cold background (I adore the imagery). The characters are the absolute best. Felix was stupid and adorable and Astra was strong and beautiful and fiery.  The first two parts of the story had already stolen my heart, and quite predictably, I found this installment near perfect. It was an absolutely breathtaking read and I just wanted to read without stopping, and in fact forgot to take notes for writing the review (which is why this review is so messy). The books are each really short, they don’t take much time to finish, hardly a sitting or two. However, M.C. Frank packs a huge amount of emotions, suspense, and sheer beauty in these pages. Not going to lie, the ending made me cry and it was beautiful. When I first finished it, I thought there were quite a lot of loose ends, but I feel like I LIKE how the ending is a little unresolved, giving you space to think.

What I didn’t like:

Not much, but I do wish there was more world-building, because I wanted to know more of the world. However, I don’t think the length and the style of the series would really support more intricate details, so I am happy with how it was all the same.

If you are looking for short reads to go with your Christmas-y mood, BUT you don’t want to read something too cheesy or too serious, this. is. perfect. I cannot stress more on how much I adore MC. Frank’s versatile writing style, and I highly recommend this series (and her other books) from the very bottom of my heart.

The fact that the covers of all three book are STUNNING is an added plus.

Happy reading guys!

Autumn Book Tag

I saw this tag in The Worn Bookmark and decided that I haven’t done one in a long time! 😀 And plus this one seems super-short and I’m super-lazy, so you can do the math 😛

What is your favorite thing about Autumn?

We don’t really have the typical “autumn” here in India. WE have really unpredictable during this time period, and I love that as well as hate it. ^_^

What book reminds you of your school days?

I read this book AGES ago as a kid, and it isn’t even really good, but it very school-ish.

Errr, lots of memories. I’m sure my classmates will understand. 😉

What book cover reminds you of Autumn?

Obviously, this one will be a very common choice.

What is your favorite horror or Halloween film?

Ummm, I hate horror movies. I haven’t watched ONE. Sorry. The scariest ENGLISH horror movie I watched was The Monster House (they gave it on Cartoon Network). Its a very cute movie. 😛

Can I mention Hindi movies? Then its:

Uggh, creepy..

What Fall book release are you most looking forward to?

😀 😀 CoHo!!!!

What Autumn movie release are you most anticipating?

None. I’m not a movie person. And waiiiiit a second, I thought this was a BOOK tag!

What are three books you plan to read this Autumn?

Any three?

I’m in a historical romance genre reading spree. 😛

So that’s it !!!! If you want to do the tag, just comment below! 😀

Don’t Make Me Beautiful- Elle Casey- Book Blitz

Don’t Make Me Beautiful by Elle Casey
Publication date: September 9th 2013
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Suspense

**This story was inspired by true events. If you liked the movie “Sleeping With the Enemy”, then you might like this story too. CONTENT WARNING: Violence, foul language, and adult situations. Not meant for younger readers.**

A ROMANTIC SUSPENSE NOVEL. No one knew a woman lived there or that she even existed. A monster, living in darkness…

At twenty-two, Nicole doesn’t even look human anymore. The beast made sure of that. So she hides. A monster, consigned to a life of fear and solitude. This is all she deserves, she is quite sure of that.
And then one day out of the blue, the autographed baseball caught by Brian Jensen at the latest Marlins game enters her prison and manages to turn her world completely upside down.

Temptation comes in the form of pity at first, and then perhaps something more. Does she dare to believe the things she’s told, that this is not the life she was meant to live? That being a monster is not her forever-fate? And will she be willing to risk everything, to reach out and accept the helping hands around her and share her deepest, darkest secrets? She knows only too well that hands can hurt. Finding out whether they can also heal is a risky proposition, especially when the beast is still out there. Looking for her.

Elle Casey is a prolific, NEW YORK TIMES and USA TODAY bestselling American writer who lives in Southern France with her husband, three kids, and several furry friends. She writes in several genres and publishes an average of one full-length novel per month.

“Maybe I’ll get lucky tonight and he’ll cheat on me and sleep somewhere else. Nicole says that to herself as a joke. He definitely cheats on her, but he never sleeps anywhere else, probably because he worries she’ll decide to go out again. He should know better. She’s too well-conditioned to dare doing that again. Besides, the locked doors make it kind of difficult.

She glances over at the table by the door that’s lit with the streetlights’ glow coming through the transom window. The framed picture is there, mocking her. She’s tried to get rid of it several times, but the monster won’t let her. It has to stay, he says, to remind her of what she’s done.

The sound of a car coming down the street makes her entire body go tense. She’s gotten very good at detecting the type of vehicle that approaches by the sound of its engine. This one roars loudly, so she knows it’s a truck. She gets up from the couch, her body stiff, and shuffles towards the front window. Twitching the curtains to the side the slightest bit is enough to tell her. Yes. It’s him.

She twists around and looks at the clock behind her. It’s late. Where has the time gone? I must have been dozing off again. Dammit! He’s been to the local bar after work.

Rushing to the kitchen, she gets a beer out of the refrigerator and scrambles to open the drawer where the opener is kept. Her hands tremble as she fits it into position over the bottle and uses it to lever the cap off. As the top flips over, she loses her hold on it, and it falls to the floor in the dark kitchen, rattling around on the tile.

“She puts the bottle down on the counter and nearly cries when some of the beer foams up and comes out the top to spill over the edge.

“Find the cap! Find the cap! Where are you, dammit?” She moans, patting the floor desperately with her hand, nearly weeping with relief when her fingers finally make contact with its jagged metal edges.

The engine goes silent. A moment later the truck’s door shuts with a muffled clunk.

“Shit, shit, shit!” she whispers, grabbing the dishtowel off the hook and hurriedly wiping the bottle and counter down. They cannot be wet, no matter what.

The sound of heavy footsteps on the front porch comes through the door…..

……The monster is home.”

R.I.P It Or SHIP It Tag

I don’t remember who (sorry!!), but someone had tagged me to do this tag, and obviously, this is one of the coolest tags I’ve ever done. The rules are simple:

1. Write down the names of characters from different books on scraps of paper. You can do as many as you like, but I did 20 (10 girls and 10 boys)

2. Put them in a container of your choosing.

3. Pull out two names at the time to form your own couples.

4. Decision time! Do you ship them or do you want their relationship to die a peaceful/painful death? Tell the world!

Note: I love all the original pairings, so lets forget them for a while, and focus on the characters as single individuals. 🙂

  1. Nastya (Sea Of Tranquility) 💗 Four (Divergent)

I’m going to SHIP them, because Nastya’s troubled past, volatile temper and strong personality will cause an explosive, dramatic but passionate relationship with Four.

2. Hermione (Harry Potter series) 💗 Cedric Diggory (Harry Potter)

😀 I love them both, so yeah, I’ll ship this!!!! Strange that both are actually from the same world, so it can only be called the work of Fate. 😀 Imagine, Hermione in all her Hermione-y awesomeness and Cedric Diggory being all cute and understanding and all… *sigh* 😛

3. Augustus (TFIOS) 💔  Layken (Slammed)

They just won’t work. Somehow. I cannot imagine them together. I say, R.I.P it !!!!

4. Etienne (Anna And The French Kiss) 💔 Tris (Divergent)

LOL.. 😀 😀 R.I.P It!!! This can’t happen!! Can you imagine?? 😀

5. Day (Legend series) 💗 Annabeth (Percy Jackson series)

Match made in heaven!! They’d be so cute together! She’s intellectually badass and he’s just crazily cute and amazing, not to mention badass too.. Ship it!!

6. Christian Grey (50 Shades) 💔 Hazel (TFIOS)

Uh, no. Just NO!! R.I.P it!!!!! Heh, Hazel would take none of the initial crap from Grey.

7. Daemon (Lux series) 💔 Anastasia Steele (50 shades)

I can’t fathom these two together. Daemon is one of my all-time favorite characters, and Anastasia is….not.

8. Sebastian (The Mortal Instruments series) 💗 Anna (Anna And The French Kiss)

What if she manages to change him? You never know. So being the ultra-optimistic person that I am, and because I always felt that Sebastian (or Jonathan) should be given a chance of redemption, I’ll ship it!

9. Finn (Trylle Trilogy) 💗 June (Legend series)

Ship it!! They’d have a highly intellectual and serious relationship, and they’d make a beautiful couple.

10. Patch (Hush, Hush series) 💔 Katniss (The Hunger Games)

As much as I love Patch, he’s too alpha and casual for Katniss. She’d just kick him out of her life at first meeting. R.I.P it!!!

This was sooooo fun!!! 😀 😀 😀 If you want to do this tag just comment below, and I’ll tag you. 🙂

P.S.: I sort of stole the cute heart images from AlexTheShadowGirl .. 😛

Totally Didn’t Book Tag

Thank you Find Me At The Library for tagging me here!! 🙂

1. Totally didn’t need to have a sequel/sequels

This book could have been ended in one. I didn’t even like the next books so much. But the concept BLEW my mind.

2. Totally didn’t need to have more than one point of view!

I’m sorry, I ADORE dual povs.. They change the entire dynamics!

3. Totally didn’t need to change cover art through the middle of a series!

I’ve never come across a massacre like that! Sorry for another non-answer!

4. Totally didn’t need a love triangle!

As if Edward and Bella’s drama weren’t enough, she shows us Jacob and then snatches him away. 😦

I can’t resist saying something negative from this book.. 😛

Why was Gale even there????

5. Totally didn’t need this book to be included in this series!

Err.. I’m aware that the series would be incomplete without this book, but c’mon!!!! I DID NOT like it.

6. Totally didn’t need a cliffhanger!

The next book wasn’t worth finishing. I don’t know, I might try again someday. But my expectations were soaring very very high.

7. Totally didn’t need to have just one point of view!

I wanted Christian’s POV. What could be so wrong with his head????? I’m glad to have Grey now, but I wish it was all in the same book. 😦

8. Totally didn’t need that much hype!

SURPRISE!!!!!! Dude, what’s so special about a sparkly vampire?????

9. Totally didn’t need a relative book reference! (e.g. Hunger Games fan would love Divergent.)

I agree with Find Me At The Library. Nothing wrong with references.

10. Totally didn’t deserve my time!

I COULD have named any bad book, but this book.. its just special. *sarcastic smile*
